A monthly look at developments and news from Equality


In February:

The British Embassy in Bucharest agreed to support a project that will see a group of UK education specialists travelling to Romania to share models of good practice in teaching and supporting Roma pupils with local authorities and education professionals there.

We published a blog on Equality's website in which Olga Baba gave her experience of working with Roma families in Bolton: Roma in Bolton.

On 15 February, Heather Ureche gave a presentation on the situation of Roma families at a seminar organised by the West Midlands Consortium Services for Travelling Children, Schools and Families, in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

On 17 February, Lucie Fremlova and Heather Ureche led workshops at a Roma Forum Day in Gravesend, Kent for education professionals.

Heather Ureche was quoted on the BBC Radio 4 programme 'The Truth About the Roma' that was broadcast on 7 February.

Together with the European Roma Rights Centre, Equality sent a letter calling on Mayor Pavel Louda to refrain from inflaming tensions between Roma and non-Roma in Nový Bydžov, Czech Republic: copy of letter.

The Runnymede Bulletin Winter 2010/11 has an article on Roma in the UK written by Equality: Discrimination as Standard.

Equality gave information on Roma and employment restrictions/situation to a Working Group from the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, which is developing a General Policy Recommendation on combating racism and racial discrimination in the field of employment.
