A monthly look at developments and news from Equality


In April:

Lucie Fremlova wrote a blog on Equality's website on celebrating International Roma Day, and the increased awareness of this special day over the last ten years: Celebrating International Roma Day.

On 6-7 April, Lucie Fremlova gave a keynote speech on Roma pupils in UK mainstream schooling, and the push factors for the movement of Roma to the UK associated with segregated education in the Czech Republic, as part of an international conference entitled 'The Art of Urban Intervention' organised by the university in Usti nad Labem.

On International Roma Day, 8 April, Heather Ureche gave a presentation to service providers in Newcastle at a workshop entitled 'The Big Issue for Roma: Exclusion or Engagement'.

And on the same day in Belfast, Alan Anstead gave a presentation to city officials and NGO representatives on how the UK news media portrays Romani people.

Heather Ureche also participated in the ERIO conference "European Roma Strategy: a Borderline between Past and Future', in Brussels on 7 April.

Alan Anstead ran the London marathon to raise funds for Equality on 17 April, finishing the 26.2 mile course in 2 hours 59 minutes. It is still not too late to donate. Details on our website.

The Guardian published an article 'Efforts to integrate Roma people are under threat from cuts' about the situation in Manchester. Equality is mentioned in the report by Ciara Leeming.
